Richard Doran, owner of Headshot Studio NZ based in Auckland, is focused on capturing his client’s best during their portrait session. With over twenty years of experience in fashion, commercial and corporate environments, Headshot Studio is focused on creating an authentic selection of images that mesh personality with professionalism.

Whether you have previously taken portraits, or not, Richard will guide you through the steps to project a version of yourself that you’ll be happy for the world to see. To get you started Headshot Studio would like to share some portrait basics:

#1. Find your comfort

The one thing we remember more than what someone says is how they make us feel. The same can be said with a good headshot or portrait. Every expression of the face tells a different story, and it’s important we create the right first impression.

The best place for you to start is to wear clothes you love and are familiar with. If you are comfortable in your appearance this will radiate through in your headshots. When you are having your photo taken it’s also a good idea to check in on how you are standing or sitting. For example, are you in a normal position or does it feel like you have reverted to a super-upright school portrait with your eyes wide open?

At Headshot Studio, we appreciate the importance of a genuine headshot and will capture the 'authentic you'.

# 2. Understand what the headshot will be used for:

Before your photoshoot takes place it’s a good idea to know what your headshot will be used for and where it will be seen. Here are two important points to consider:

  • LinkedIn:
LinkedIn uses a circle frame for your profile, so you need to make sure there is plenty of width in the background to ensure you fit nicely into the format without overcrowding it.

  • Website:
It’s always a good idea to review where the image will be placed on the website and what colors will be surrounding the photo. The background style you choose for your portrait will affect the whole feel of the image.

For example, a dark grey background gives an excellent modern and corporate feel, whereas a really fresh white/light grey can give a nice bright and natural look. If you are using a headshot with a white background it may get lost if it is going to be used on a white website page.

#3. Review the images as you go

This is a game-changer!

Richard is almost always tethered to a computer. Having the ability to review the headshots as you go allows for on the spot adjustments to be made to ensure your best is captured. As Headshot Studio takes you through the photos you will be coached so you feel great in front of the camera. With your confidence soaring you will deliver the most awesome version of you.

#4. Use Flattering Lighting

Over the years Headshot Studio has perfected the lighting setup and design to simulate a natural composition via non-direct lighting. This style is Richard’s favorite and can be found in a doorway with an open sky in front, but with no direct sunlight. Using continuous daylight balanced LED lighting panels and diffusers you can be confident in knowing that Headshot Studio will take great care in lighting your face the best way possible. With over 20 years of professional photography experience, Richard’s lighting and photographic talent will make your shots tastefully stand out.
